The Cannon County Sheriff’s Department completed a week of in-service training July 26-30. Guest speakers during the week included Assistant District Attorney David Puckett, Public Defender Gerald Melton, Dr. Gayle Tate, DVM, Tennessee Association of Rescue Squad Instructor Tim Bell and Robin H. Kimbrough, Legal Counsel for the TN Coalition Against Domestic and Sexual Violence. A variety of topics were discussed during the session including domestic violence, preserving the chain of evidence, compiling an arrest warrant, crime scene preservation and gun qualifying at the range.

Gordon’s Fight Against Meth Production Proceeds through Congress

Congressman Bart Gordon’s bill to make it harder for meth producers to access needed pharmaceutical ingredients has passed the House Committee on Energy and Commerce.
“Tennessee continues to be home base for a large meth production industry. We need to cut that industry off at the source,” Gordon said. “Reinforcing tough restrictions on retailers and distributors of these products will reduce the availability of meth in our communities.”

A man in Manchester has been arrested on bigamy charges. According to WGNS Radio, authorities said James Hubert Nash had two wives: one in Coffee County and one in Cannon County.

Industrial Board Welcomes THC Select To Woodbury

Up to 15 new jobs will be created here in Cannon County after the Cannon County Industrial Board approved the deal between the County and THC Select of Waverly.
THC Select is a plastic injection molding company making food storage containers for hospitals across the country, as well as CNC precision components. Corbett Gibson, company management, represented THC Select during the Board meeting at the Cannon County Courthouse Thursday night.

Arrests continue following sealed indictments from the Cannon County Grand Jury. Brandi Lynn Deese, 27, Bryson Court, Woodbury, turned herself in at the Cannon County Jail on Monday, July 26th.
A sealed indictment was returned against Deese by the May term of the grand jury on charges of:
Sale of Schedule II Controlled Substance,
Maintaining a Vehicle for the Purpose of Sale of Narcotics and
Maintaining a Dwelling for the Purpose of Sale of Narcotics.

West Side Educators Attend Red Cross Workshop

The Heart of Tennessee Chapter of the American Red Cross is assisting the faculty of West Side Elementary School become one of the best prepared schools in Cannon County. On Tuesday the 27th of July the Red Cross provided, at no expense to the Cannon County School System twenty faculty members in CPR, First Aid and Defibrillator use.

General Sessions Court
Judge Susan Melton presided over Cannon County General Sessions Court on Tuesday. Some of the results from the various cases which appeared on the docket included:
Sherman T. Rumsey pled guilty to the charge of violation of probation. His probation was extended and he was ordered to serve 30 days in jail.
Troy L. Adams pled guilty to the charge of violation of probation. His probation was extended and he was ordered to pay the court costs.

Lions Football Team Wants You To “Get Smart”

Football season for the Cannon County Lions begins in less than a month. Along with the practice sessions, members of the team are hoping fans of the team will get smart. Again this year, team members are selling smart cards. Smart cards are promotional discount cards. The purchaser will be entitled to savings at 19 area businesses.
The cards are $15.00 with proceeds going to the football team. Cards are on sale from any member of the team.
Cannon County opens its regular season on Friday, August 20th with a road trip to Spring Hill.
